Consider Your Niche
One of the first steps in how to write a good Instagram bio is to know your niche. This refers to the main topic you’ll talk about on your Instagram account, and it can make or break the rest of the steps to write a bio.
If you already have a blog, you can choose the same niche for your Instagram account. Otherwise, think about your goals for the account, such as to make money.
In that case, you’ll want to consider how you’ll make money. Maybe you have a service or a product you want to promote, so you choose a niche that relates back to that.
Choose a Good Display Name
Assuming your handle is the name of your blog or business, you now need to decide on a display name. This is the name that appears right above your bio, and it doesn’t have to be the same as your handle.
Along with your handle, your display name is searchable. That means it can show up in search results on Instagram, so be sure to include a keyword or two related to your niche.
Then, when someone is searching for someone who does what you do, your account may show up. The rest of your profile can then help convert that visitor into a follower.
Use Your Niche Statement
When writing the actual bio part of your Instagram bio, you may want to use your niche statement. This is the statement or elevator pitch you give when talking about your blog or business.
It usually has the format of “I help X do Y to achieve Z result.” But you can make the statement something else. Either way, it needs to describe what you do and who you help.
That way, anyone who stumbles upon your account will instantly know if you can help them. If so, they may decide to follow you and check out content you’ve already posted.
List What Makes You Unique
Another way to fill the space of your bio is to make a short list of things that make you unique. This is great for a personal brand where you want to connect with your audience.
You can share some fun facts about you. For example, I’ve shared how I prefer Dr. Pepper over coffee as my caffeine source of choice.
But you can also choose things that are more relevant to what you do. For example, maybe you share how you’re a dog mom if you have a pet blog.
You don’t have a ton of characters to use for your Instagram bio. Because of that, I sometimes like to add an emoji or two to cover more details than I can with just words.
Emojis can also make your bio more visually engaging. If you just use text, people may find your bio boring, and they might not want to follow you.
Now, you don’t have to go overboard with emojis or use them instead of words. But combining some words with a few emojis is a great way to make your bio more appealing and engaging.
Include a CTA
At the end of your bio, try to leave enough room for a call-to-action (CTA). This is where you tell people to take action, such as to click on your website or send you a DM.
Without a CTA, people may not know what you want them to do. That means they could leave your profile without following you or engaging with your content.
So think about your current goals. If you want more followers, tell people to follow you. And if you’re looking for more clients, tell people to click on a link to your service page.
Add a Link
Another essential step in how to write a good Instagram bio is to take advantage of the link spot. If you have a blog or website, add a link to it.
Even if your CTA has nothing to do with your website, you should still link to it. People who want to know more about you and what you do can click on it.
Plus, it will give you an extra backlink to your website, which may help with your SEO. Then, you could also get more traffic from search results.
Don’t Forget Highlights
Your Instagram Story Highlights aren’t technically part of your bio, but they’re part of your profile. You can use your highlights to further convince people to follow you.
Choose some highlight topics that are related to your niche. For example, you may create a highlight for each of your main brand pillars, and you can add your best story slides to those highlights.
Then, as people explore your account, they can check out more of what you’ve posted. Good highlights may mean the difference between an extra follow or not.
Upload an Attractive Profile Photo
Another part of your profile to keep in mind is the photo. If your Instagram account is for your personal brand, you should use a good photo of yourself.
I chose a photo that I had taken last year during a professional shoot. But in the past, I’ve used selfies and other photos that I’ve taken of myself with a timer and tripod.
Just make sure you choose a photo where you’re smiling and where there’s good lighting. Your photo will show up in peoples’ notifications, so if it looks bad, you may not even get people to visit your profile.
How Long Can Your Instagram Bio Be?
Your Instagram bio can be up to 150 characters. That’s why I like to use things like emojis to help convey a message without wasting characters.
I’ll also change my bio when I feel the need to change it. That can help you promote your latest offer, and you can change your bio as much as you want.
Knowing how to write a good Instagram bio can make or break your account. Be sure you know your niche and that you have a niche statement.
But don’t forget about other elements, such as your profile photo and link. Then, you can encourage profile visitors to follow your account for more.
